Heirloom Tomato Seeds

There are many different varieties of heirloom tomato seeds, and probably one of the most popular reasons people to plant these tomatoes is their local resistance to pests, local weather, as well as their unique look and flavor. Also, heirloom tomato seeds are frequently grown organically without pesticides, fertilizers, or growth hormones.

Heirloom tomato seeds are those varieties of tomatoes that were usually cultivated before 1950. This was before crop tomatoes were being grown in large quantities by crop farmers and genetically changed. The crop farmer hybrid varieties do not openly cultivate themselves, meaning that the farmer has to buy seed every year. Heirloom tomatoes are openly cultivated and will actually produce their own seeds for the next year, saving the farmer from purchasing new seed and being able to cultivate these tomatoes on a yearly basis without extra cost.

Also, many of the heirloom varieties of tomatoes are easy to grow organically. Since they are resistant to pests, you don't need to use pesticides, and because they grow easily in local climates, you don't need fertilizers either. This means that they can be organically grown in local soil; also, being organic is another popular reason for consumers to purchase the heirloom tomatoes.

Most people are accustomed to the look of a tomato in a grocery store; many of the heirloom varieties give a different taste, texture and look to the tomato. This gives them another reason for being a popular hobby farm tomato. People enjoy the distinctive flavors and look of some of the varieties such as Brandywine, Black Krim, Big Rainbow, which is a yellow tomato with interesting red swirls, and other primitive tomato seed varieties.

Heirloom tomato seeds are now easily found on the Internet with many seed exchanges, organic farming sites, and sometimes local garden stores offering the farmer a chance to try a new variety. The best part about heirloom tomatoes is their ability to reproduce themselves. Also, you can purchase heirloom tomato seeds online or head to seed companies. Before purchasing, research the seed company and where they're getting their heirloom seeds, this will allow you to find the type that will grow best in your locale.

Remember, when it comes to purchasing heirloom tomato seeds that you want the variety that's going to grow best in your personal locale unless are going to use greenhouse services. These types of tomato seeds are suited to your environment, will be hardy against the local pests, grow well in your own soil, and survived the weather. This is why heirloom tomato seeds are so popular, they're easy to grow, offer something different, and can be grown organically as well as save you money by not having to purchase seed every year.
